DAY 2 – MOUNT KELUD SUNRISE → MOUNT BROMO

Note: For the trekking, you can choose for 6h trekking up and down with tactical path (few of them) or 4th trekking with slighly easier path. You can discuss with our guide one day before and make sure your shoes are properly prepread for this trekking.

Here is the comparison between the Tulungrejo (6h) and Karangrejo (4h )hiking trails to see the sunrise at Mount Kelud:

    • Mount Kelud via Tulungrejo (Gandusari, Blitar)

This is the classic, official main route for hiking. It is well-established but requires more physical stamina.

Pros:

Spectacular Crater Sunrise Views: It brings you right up to the rugged outer rim and volcanic craters. The dramatic post-eruption landscape makes for a very cinematic sunrise.

Thrill of the “Dragon’s Back” (Punggungan Naga): You get to trek along a beautiful, narrow mountain ridge which is an incredible photogenic backdrop as the sun rises.

Better Public Transport Access: It is relatively easier to reach from the Wlingi train station or via local transit up to the basecamp area.

Cons:

Steeper and Harder Terrain: The trail has sustained steep inclines and requires scrambling over large volcanic boulders. It is highly tiring if you are doing a “tektok” (one-day sunrise dash).

No Water Sources: There are absolutely no natural water springs on the trail. You must carry all your heavy water logistics from the bottom.

    • Mount Kelud via Karangrejo (Garum, Blitar)

This is a newer, modern route that is highly praised for being beginner-friendly and having versatile logistics.

Other Package  SEMERU VOLCANO TREKKING (5D4N)

Pros:

Time-Saving Ojek Option: If you are chasing a sunrise and running late, you can hire a local trail motorcycle taxi (ojek) from the basecamp straight up to the higher posts. This cuts down your actual hiking time significantly.

Gentler, Friendlier Incline: The terrain is much more forgiving and landy, making it perfect for beginners or a relaxed night hike.

Rich View Variety: You pass through 7 peaks and valleys, dense forests, and beautiful open savanas.

Cons:

Sandy/Loose Terrain Near Peaks: The final sections (like Puncak Butak) consist of steep iron ladders and heavily loose volcanic sand/gravel. If you wear sandals, pebbles will constantly get in.

Harder Basecamp Access: The road leading to the Karangrejo basecamp is mostly unpaved dirt and broken rocks. It is mostly accessible only by private motorcycles.

Direct Comparison Summary

Tulungrejo Route  (6h)🥾

  • Best Used For : Traditional trekking challenge
  • Difficulty Level : Moderate to Challenging
  • Water Source : ❌ None
  • Peak Scenery : Raw volcanic crater and rocky ridges

Karangrejo Route (4h) 🏍️

  • Best Used For : Quick sunrise dash via ojek (bike taxi) shortcut
  • Difficulty Level : Easy to Moderate (Beginner-friendly)
  • Water Source : Available near Camp Area (Pos 4)
  • Peak Scenery : Meadow valleys, savanas, and iron ladders

The Itinerary:

Option 1: The Fast & Assisted Option (Via Karangrejo)

Because local motorcycle taxis (ojek) can take you directly up to the higher posts, this route is the ultimate choice for a stress-free, fast sunrise tektok.

Total Hiking Time: ~2.5 to 3 hours (with ojek assistance). Basecamp Arrival: 01:30 AM. (So we start from Blitar around 00:00)

Target Summit Arrival: 05:00 AM (gives you time to rest and secure a prime viewing spot).

The Schedule:

  • 01:30 AM – 02:00 AM: Arrive at the Karangrejo Basecamp, handle registration and pack your gear.
  • 02:00 AM – 02:15 AM: Take the local ojek shortcut from the basecamp up to Pos 1 or Pos 3. This saves your leg stamina immensely. If you dont use Ojek (bike service), you need 1h more for the trekking
  • 02:15 AM – 05:00 AM: Begin hiking from the drop-off point. The incline is relatively gentle through the valleys and savannahs.
  • 05:00 AM: Reach the Puncak Lembu Suro area or the crater viewpoint just in time for dawn.

Option 2: The Traditional Pure Trekking Option (Via Tulungrejo)

This is a standard, raw mountain climb. There are no ojek shortcuts to the high posts, so your legs will do 100% of the work on a steeper terrain.

Total Hiking Time: ~4.5 to 6 hours.

Ideal Basecamp Arrival: 11:30 PM (so we start from Blitar around 10 PM).

Target Summit Arrival: 05:00 AM.

The Tektok Schedule:

  • 11:30 PM – 12:00 AM: Arrive at the Pine Forest Loji Basecamp, check your heavy water supply (as there is no water source on trail), and prep your headlamps.
  • 12:00 AM: Start hiking immediately. The push from the entrance up to Pos 1 and Pos 2 takes a steady 2.5 hours.
  • 02:30 AM – 04:30 AM: Push from Pos 2 to Pos 4 (Lembu Suro). The trail gets steep, leading you onto the exposed ridge line known as the “Dragon’s Back” (Punggungan Naga).
  • 04:30 AM – 05:00 AM: Scramble over the final rocky sections to hit the outer crater rim before the sun breaks the horizon.

Essential Tektok Rules for Mount Kelud

The 2-Liter Water Rule: If you choose Tulungrejo, pack at least 2 to 3 liters of water per person. Do not rely on finding any springs.

Beware the Sand: The peaks feature loose volcanic ash. Avoid open-toe hiking sandals for the final summit push; wear proper trekking shoes or small pebbles will constantly slice into your feet.

Check the Weather: If it rained heavily the afternoon before, the volcanic paths turn into incredibly slippery mud. Karangrejo is slightly safer during wet turnouts due to its gentler incline.

After breakfast, continue your journey toward Mount Bromo. The drive takes you through the changing landscapes of East Java, from agricultural areas and mountain roads to the highlands around Bromo.

Arrive in the Bromo area in the afternoon and check in to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax and prepare for the following morning’s Bromo sunrise.

Highlights:

  • ⭐ Mount Kelud sunrise
  • Mount Kelud volcanic landscape
  • Private transfer to Bromo via Blitar (5h drive)
  • Relaxing evening in the Bromo highlands

Overnight: Ngadisari Village, Sapikerep village Bromo area

DAY 3 – MOUNT BROMO SUNRISE → BANYUWANGI

Bromo Sunrise, Sea of Sand & Journey East

After sunrise, continue by jeep into the Sea of Sand. From here, walk toward Mount Bromo and climb the stairs leading to the crater rim, where you can look into the active volcanic crater.

Return to the hotel for breakfast and a shower before checking out.

Continue the journey toward Banyuwangi (6 hours drive), traveling through East Java’s scenic countryside. Depending on the road conditions and arrival time, there may be an opportunity for a short stop along the way.

Other Package  SEMERU VOLCANO TREKKING 4D3N (VIA MALANG)

Begin the trek in the darkness toward Ijen Crater. The hike takes approximately 1.5–2 hours depending on your pace.

For travelers interested in seeing the famous blue fire, access is subject to current park regulations, weather and safety conditions. Otherwise, continue toward the crater rim and wait for sunrise.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR IJEN CRATER:

* Visitors descending into the crater must maintain a minimum safety distance of 500 meters from the sulfur mining area.

* The visibility of the blue fire is no longer visible due to a problem with the miners in the mining area. So for now, the tour will be sunrise and crater view. But sometimes, the locals make a fake blue fire on the rocks by burning the sulfur.

As daylight arrives, the spectacular turquoise-colored Ijen Crater Lake gradually appears below. You can also observe the surrounding volcanic landscape and, when permitted and safe, the traditional sulfur mining activities.

After enjoying Ijen, trek back down to Paltuding and continue to Banyuwangi.

After breakfast or a short refreshment stop, drive to Ketapang Harbour for the ferry crossing to Gilimanuk, Bali.
