Banyuwangi is a town that located 47 km from Kawah ijen, it takes about ± an hour to reach the start point before you do a trekking. We named it Paltuding, it’s an parking place where you can prepare your things before your hike, there are some small canteens to support your energy.
Banyuwangi is also the last town in the eastern part of Java island which makes Banyuwangi is the last town in java island before you will go to Bali island. This is the reason why Banyuwangi is becoming the best place to start your trekking to Kawah Ijen.
First reason is most of the travelers travels starts from west java and end up in Bali, and for sure, they will stop by in Banyuwangi before heading to Bali. One of the must-see place in Indonesia is in Banyuwangi, that is Ijen Crater.
Second reason is Bali to Banyuwangi is just 5 hours away, for example if you stay in Kuta, Canggu, Ubud, Sanur or Seminyak. And if you stay in Pemuteran or Lovina, it will be less than 3 hours. From Bali to Banyuwangi, you just need to grab a car to Gilimanuk Harbor, then you take a ferry for about an hour to Banyuwangi.
To reach Kawah Ijen, there are 3 ways;

- Join a sharing tour, there are some local agency in Banyuwangi provide a sharing tour for budget solo traveler. Make sure their listed on TripAdvisor.
- Rent a motorbike, there is no public transport to reach Kawah Ijen, the cheapest way is renting a motorbike and drive by yourself. This is quite dangerous due to the road is steep and slippery. Once on the weekend there is always injured traveler that falls down from their motorbike. So, please be safe is you choose this way.
