The new overland tour to visit Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater from Yogyakarta without train between Yogyakarta to Surabaya, we will drive our car via the new highway which is better compared to 2-3 years ago, now it takes only 6H30M for 430 km from Yogyakarta to Mount Bromo area (Cemoro Lawang village).
TOUR ITINERARY:
DAY 1: YOGYAKARTA – MOUNT BROMO AREA (STAYING OVERNIGHT)
On the first day of the trip, we will start at about 8 am from your hotel in the Yogyakarta area, our team will pick you up and ready to drive to the Mount Bromo area for about 6H30M, it’s a long road trip but it will be fun, we can stop at the local restaurant for lunch and stop at the rice fields or any interesting spots along the way.
DAY 2: MOUNT BROMO TOUR – TRANSFER TO IJEN CRATER AREA (STAYING OVERNIGHT)
On the second day, we will start earlier which is at 3:30 am, our local jeep will take you to the best spot to watch the sunrise in the Mount Bromo area. That is Kingkong Hill, from your accommodation (for example Lava View Lodge) it takes 45 minutes to drive there.
Afterward, you can secure your place before the crowd comes or you can just chill at the local shops where they sell hot teas or coffee with firewood in front of you. The sunrise is at 5:30 am but around 5 am, you can see the red color in the sky already. We recommend getting your place before 5:30 am, so you can capture the best moment without seeing the people in front of you.
Around 6:30 am, we will get back to our jeep and be ready to drive to the sea of sand where we start our 45-minute hike to the peak of Mount Bromo. If you feel tired and want to ride a horse, you can ride a horse which costs you around 300.000 IDR / horse/person (the price might vary).
At 9:00 am, we will drive back to our accommodation to have breakfast, clean up, and pack our stuff before we continue to drive to the Ijen Crater area (a 6-hour drive).
DAY 3: IJEN BLUE FIRE TOUR – TRANSFER TO YOUR HOTEL IN BALI
On the last day of the trip, we will start at 00:50 from your accommodation and drive about an hour to reach the Paltuding area. From here, we will start hiking to the top of Ijen Crater for about 1h30m and 35 minutes down inside the crater to see the blue fire closer.
The path is quite okay from Paltuding to the peak of Ijen Crater, but from the peak to inside the crater, it will be rocky and a bit slippery, so make sure you always mind your own steps.
The blue fire only appears in the darkness, so manage your time. After that, we will get back to the peak of Ijen Crater to see the whole landscape of Ijen Crater at sunrise and the sunrise here is at 5:30 am.
IMPORTANT:
Blue Fire/Blue Flame Phenomenon at Ijen Crater
The Blue Fire, a rare and extraordinary natural phenomenon at Ijen Crater, is caused by the combustion of sulfuric gases ignited at high temperatures. However, it’s important to note that the Blue Fire is not always visible. There are times when it may not appear at all or remain invisible for extended periods due to changing natural conditions. Please keep in mind that this is a natural phenomenon and is beyond human control.
Around 7 am, we will get back to our car again, drive back to your accommodation, have breakfast, shower, and be ready to go to Ketapang Ferry port where you will take the ferry to Bali side (Gilimanuk harbor), it will take about 1h30m sailing. Upon your arrival in the Bali side, our Balinese driver will be ready to welcome you and escort you to your hotel in the Bali area.
OPTIONAL TOUR:
If you feel tired and don’t want to start at midnight, we can start the trekking to Ijen Crater in the morning, so start from your accommodation at 6 am, we will bring your breakfast box, and we will have breakfast there before we hike.

TIPS BEFORE VISITING MOUNT BROMO AND IJEN:
Mount Bromo:
It will be very cold and windy at the Bromo viewpoint while we wait for sunrise so bring lots of warm layers (9-13C). And a rain jacket for the wind or just in case. Afterward, you will go on a 30-minute walk to the crater. It will be warmer by then so dress in layers and have good walking shoes.
Ijen Crater:
Temperature is about 9-15, it will be about 9-11 at the start of ijen but you will get very hot and sweaty on the hike up. And colder again as you wait for sunrise. Bring good walking/hiking shoes, layers, and a rain jacket for wind or in case of rain.
Last one: Lots of snacks for car rides.
